What surprised us about energy bars is how badly the category label maps to the glucose response. The bar shelf at the grocery store is sorted by marketing — protein, nutrition, wellness, fitness, meal — but glucose responds to sugar and protein content, full stop. Larabar and Kind, both filed under wellness, averaged +37.8 mg/dL across 878 logs. Quest and RXBAR, filed under protein, averaged +24.2 mg/dL across 36,650. The shelf tag doesn't predict the curve; the macro panel does.

Methodology

This page draws on 43,247 logged energy-bar meals from 6,835 unique Signos members, plus a single-item sub-cohort of 24,520 logs (3,815 members) where the bar was logged alone with no other food. Data were filtered to postprandial glucose responses (PPGR) between 0 and 100 mg/dL to exclude sensor artifacts and implausible readings. Modifier effects were estimated using Welch's t-test on matched pairs against a defined baseline; all reported effects carry p<0.001 unless noted. We report mean glucose peak across a right-skewed distribution — the median spike of +22 mg/dL is a few mg/dL lower than the mean of +25.0 mg/dL, which is typical for this type of data. The food was identified in member logs using a regex matching "energy bar", "protein bar", "granola bar", "nutrition bar", "meal bar", and known brand names (Quest, RXBAR, Larabar, Kind, Clif, PowerBar, Soylent), excluding traditional candy bars (Snickers, Kit Kat, Twix). Form-factor sub-cohorts require at least 100 matched meals to surface in the recipe builder; the fitness / endurance category (n=14) was suppressed for insufficient sample.

Limitations

  • Self-reported portion sizes introduce measurement error — bars logged as a single serving may vary in actual weight, especially for thicker meal-replacement formats.
  • Cohort skews health-motivated; Signos members tracking glucose tend to favor protein bars over candy-style bars, which may underrepresent the high-sugar end of the energy-bar market.
  • The fitness / endurance bar sub-cohort (n=14) was below our reporting threshold and is suppressed from this page; results for Clif and PowerBar formulations should not be inferred from the broader cohort means.
  • The pre/post-workout carb-pair sub-cohort (n=7) was below threshold and is suppressed; the −9 mg/dL directional signal is not statistically reliable.
  • Brand-tier classification is based on regex matching of bar names in member logs — a member typing "energy bar" without specifying brand is filed under the granola anchor, which may miss protein-bar consumption that wasn't named explicitly.
  • Modifier analyses reflect meal-level correlations, not controlled feeding trials — causality cannot be established from observational CGM data alone.
