Across 43,247 logged energy-bar meals from 6,835 Signos members, the average glucose peak was +25.0 mg/dL (median +22 mg/dL) — the lowest mean in the snack-and-candy tranche, sitting under chocolate (+29.0), apples (+31.5), and chips (+38.9). But that single number hides the entire story. Protein bars (Quest, RXBAR, Pure) averaged +24.2 mg/dL across 36,650 logs — the lowest tier. Granola bars came in at +27.0 mg/dL (n=4,859). Meal-replacement bars averaged +30.0 mg/dL (n=310). Nutrition / wellness bars like Larabar and Kind topped the cohort at +37.8 mg/dL (n=878) — a +10.8 mg/dL delta over the granola anchor, driven almost entirely by date paste and dried-fruit sweeteners. The category you grab off the shelf matters more than almost any other modifier.

Energy bars span an unusually wide glycemic range for what looks like a single product category. Across 43,247 logged meals from 6,835 Signos members, the average glucose peak was +25.0 mg/dL — but that mean averages over a +24.2 mg/dL protein-bar tier and a +37.8 mg/dL nutrition-bar tier, a 56% gap. Three macronutrient drivers explain almost all of the variation. Sugar content is the single largest modifier we measured: bars with ≥20g sugar spiked 48.7% higher than low-sugar bars (n=2,042, p<0.001, CI: +10.57 to +12.27 mg/dL). Total carb load runs a close second: ≥60g carb bars spiked 46.0% higher (n=2,084). Protein content pulls the opposite direction, with ≥15g protein cutting the response by 17.1% (n=29,268). The mechanism is consistent with what we see across the snack tranche — fast carbs lift, protein and fat dampen — but in the energy-bar category these forces fight inside a single product, with the macro panel ultimately deciding the curve.
This page draws on 43,247 logged energy-bar meals from 6,835 unique Signos members, plus a single-item sub-cohort of 24,520 logs (3,815 members) where the bar was logged alone with no other food. Data were filtered to postprandial glucose responses (PPGR) between 0 and 100 mg/dL to exclude sensor artifacts and implausible readings. Modifier effects were estimated using Welch's t-test on matched pairs against a defined baseline; all reported effects carry p<0.001 unless noted. We report mean glucose peak across a right-skewed distribution — the median spike of +22 mg/dL is a few mg/dL lower than the mean of +25.0 mg/dL, which is typical for this type of data. The food was identified in member logs using a regex matching "energy bar", "protein bar", "granola bar", "nutrition bar", "meal bar", and known brand names (Quest, RXBAR, Larabar, Kind, Clif, PowerBar, Soylent), excluding traditional candy bars (Snickers, Kit Kat, Twix). Form-factor sub-cohorts require at least 100 matched meals to surface in the recipe builder; the fitness / endurance category (n=14) was suppressed for insufficient sample.
