This page draws on 3,278 single-item Muffin logs (meals where a muffin was logged alone, no pairings) from 1,816 unique Signos members, plus a broader 13,193-meal cohort spanning all meal contexts where a muffin appeared, collected through the Signos production CGM platform. Data were filtered to postprandial glucose responses (PPGR) between 0 and 100 mg/dL to exclude sensor artifacts and implausible readings. Modifier effects were estimated using Welch's t-test on matched pairs against a defined baseline; all reported effects carry p<0.001 unless noted. We report mean glucose peak across a right-skewed distribution — the median single-item spike of +31 mg/dL is a few mg/dL lower than the mean of +34.2 mg/dL, which is typical for this type of data. The food was identified in member logs using a regex matching "muffin" as a primary ingredient, excluding English muffins (a separate savory category). Any form or carb-pair sub-cohort requires at least 30 matched meals to appear in the recipe builder; high-confidence labels require 500+.

Limitations

  • Self-reported portion sizes introduce measurement error — a logged "muffin" can range from a 1.5-oz bakery mini to a 6-oz coffee-shop jumbo, and the cohort doesn't always distinguish.
  • Cohort skews health-motivated; Signos members actively tracking glucose tend to eat more mindfully than the general population, so real-world average spikes may differ.
  • The coffee / cinnamon / streusel form sub-cohort is small (n=83) and carries low confidence — its reported +40 mg/dL average should be treated as directional only.
  • The bran-muffin sub-cohort (n=170) is medium confidence — commercial bran muffins still carry refined flour and added sugar, so the average likely overstates a homemade bran-muffin response.
  • Coffee-shop / jumbo muffins (n=0 in the form sub-cohort) couldn't be measured separately — readers should treat the heaviest-carb-bucket spike (+46.5 mg/dL, 110g+ carbs) as the closest available proxy.
