Methodology

This page draws on 13,025 pickle-tagged logged meals from 4,966 unique Signos members, collected through the Signos production CGM platform. Data were filtered to postprandial glucose responses (PPGR) between 0 and 100 mg/dL to exclude sensor artifacts and implausible readings. Modifier effects were estimated using Welch's t-test on matched pairs against a defined baseline; all reported effects carry p<0.001 unless noted. Because pickles have a published glycemic index of 0 and glycemic load of 0, the recipe-builder form anchors are overridden to 0 mg/dL — the underlying cohort means (preserved in `option_mean_full_cohort`) reflect the breads and burger buns members ate alongside each form, not the pickles themselves. The food was identified in member logs using a regex that matched "pickle" as a primary ingredient, with exclusions for pickled non-cucumbers (beets, onions, jalapenos, eggs, herring) and brand-name false positives like "pickleball." Any food-pair pairing slot requires at least 100 matched meals before it appears in the recipe builder.

Limitations

  • Self-reported portion sizes introduce measurement error — a logged "1 spear" of pickle may vary in actual size, affecting per-serving estimates.
  • Cohort skews health-motivated; Signos members actively tracking glucose tend to eat more mindfully than the general population, so real-world average pairings may differ.
  • The fried-pickles food-pair sub-cohort has medium confidence (n=492), the hot-dog sub-cohort has medium confidence (n=240), and the sweet-gherkin form has low confidence (n=92); treat each as directional rather than statistically firm.
  • Cohort means appear non-zero (e.g. dill +28.6 mg/dL) because members underreport sides — "logged: pickle; ate: pickle on a burger." The published GI=0 is the editorially correct anchor, which is why our recipe builder reads alone = 0.
  • Modifier analyses reflect meal-level correlations, not controlled feeding trials — causality cannot be established from observational CGM data alone.
  • Bread-and-butter pickles contain ~3g of sugar per spear, but this is too small to move the published GI off 0; the +4 mg/dL cohort-mean delta vs. dill almost certainly reflects what members ate alongside, not the brine sweetness itself.
